Vale do Lizandro is in Carvoeira, between Ericeira and Mafra, about five minutes from the coast. It has its own village primary school and a wide choice of schools nearby: the Portuguese public system, a well-known cluster of alternative and forest schools, and international schools within about half an hour.
The parish of Carvoeira has its own public pre-school and primary school, Escola Básica da Freguesia da Carvoeira, in Fonte Boa da Brincosa. It belongs to the Agrupamento de Escolas da Ericeira, the group of public schools that also runs the middle school in Ericeira. Older students move on to secondary school in Mafra, or to the private Colégio Miramar in neighbouring Santo Isidoro.
Ericeira has also become known, over the last decade, for a tight-knit community of alternative schools: forest schools, a democratic school, a Montessori space and a small Waldorf-inspired centre. Many families relocate here specifically for them. For an English-language curriculum, the closest option is the international school in Torres Vedras, with the American, British and Cambridge schools of the Sintra area roughly forty minutes away.
One thing to know early. Nurseries and the alternative schools around Ericeira are popular and most run waiting lists. If schooling is part of your decision, contact the schools and arrange a visit as early as you can, ideally before the pre-registration period in spring.
Families here tend to choose one of three paths, and some combine them over a child's school years. None of them requires living in Ericeira itself: from Carvoeira, all three are a short drive.
