Five minutes from your door the road ends at Foz do Lizandro, where the river meets the Atlantic. The beach is wide and the water is calm enough for children most of the year. Walk north along the cliffs and you are in the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve.

Vale do Lizandro sits in Carvoeira, a place where people live all year. There is a bakery, a school bus, and friendly neighbours who will make you feel welcome. Ericeira is five minutes away for the market, the harbour and a proper dinner out.

From your door you can ride gravel along the Lizandro valley or take the road up to Mafra. The trails begin where the tarmac ends, so you never need to load a bike onto the car.
Foz do Lizandro is where you learn, with Ribeira d'Ilhas and Coxos up the coast when you are ready for more. The whole stretch north of here is the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, the first in Europe.
Five minutes away for the market, the harbour and dinner out. Close enough that you go on a Tuesday evening without thinking about it, and you still come home to a quiet village.
The valley itself is green all year, with footpaths along the river and up through the pine and eucalyptus to the ridge. A short drive away is the Tapada de Mafra, a walled royal hunting park with deer and wild boar, part of the Mafra World Heritage site since 2019.
Fish comes off the boats at Ericeira and vegetables are grown on the valley floor around you. At home you have space to grow your own. The restaurants are open all year, so you can eat well in January as easily as in July.
